Sunday 16th July 2023

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!’

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18 ‘Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. 23 But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

Sunday Gospel Reading 3rd May

John 10

Jesus the Good Shepherd

10 “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Project G Latest News!

Buildings Project Update

We are very pleased to be able to update you with progress on our project.

It may have seemed as though not much has been happening lately. However, there has been plenty of activity in the background! We have had many emails and meetings with all the relevant parties; Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, our architects Studio4, the Diocese and finally our chosen contractor RV Dart. These have all been a necessary part of the planning and preparation for the work starting.

The good news is that you can now expect to see RV Dart here on site from

Monday 10th July!

It is very important for us to be able to continue all the activities that go in in the church and hall during the building works, so the phasing – the order of the works – of the project has changed. The building work will begin with the new meeting rooms and toilets, and once they are complete work will start on the hall extension. This means we will have a meeting space available for us and our hirers throughout the project.

A corridor from the foyer to the new meeting rooms and toilets will be built by knocking through the gent’s toilets. This means that at some stage – and as a temporary measure – we will have only one toilet, the ladies, which we will have to share (we will be able to lock the main door!)

The contractors will be using the car park for their equipment, and therefore access to the car park will be very much restricted during the build. We ask that you make other arrangements to get here wherever possible.

Fundraising and grant applications are still ongoing, and we would love you to pray for us on a regular basis.  Being involved and supporting Project G offers you the opportunity to be part of something that God is doing here among us and we cannot do what we believe God is calling us to do without your incredible support, so please consider supporting us financially!

Thank you for your patience, your co-operation and your support throughout this project.

May you be blessed richly in all you do.

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.”

Matthew 7:24-25

Why is Lent Important?

Why is Lent important?

Lent is a time of getting ready for Easter.

When Jesus was just getting started with his work, he went into the desert for 40 days to be all alone with God. He even went without food and prayed, and was tempted away from what God wanted him to do in all kinds of ways, but he resisted that temptation.

You can read that story here:

During Lent, Christians often do something different too, like praying every day or reading the Bible. This reminds us of Jesus’ time in the desert to focus just on God and feel closer to him.

The good news is that Sundays are still celebration days – so you can take a break from fasting!

The last week of Lent is called Holy Week – during this time, the church remembers Jesus’ death on a cross.

Even young children can take part in Lent. For example giving up a sweet treat every day might remind children that we can live more simply.

Our church in Lent

St. Gabriel’s will look quite different during Lent. You might notice the colour purple, and there will be very few decorations or flowers. This is because it’s a time to concentrate on God and remember how Jesus gave up his life on a cross to save all of us.

Because Lent is a time to reflect, church music and songs will tend to be more reflective and services won’t include the word ‘Alleluia’ – a very joyful word to express praise for God.

It’s a big contrast when Easter Day arrives, when the colourful decorations come out, there’s lots of celebration, ‘Alleuias’ and joyful music!

Why not come along to a service here at St. Gabriel’s during Lent and see how it is different to other services you have been to, say at Christmas? Then come along on Easter Sunday and see how joyful the church is!
